THE WORLD IS THE GAME

GO FURTHER.
STAY THERE.

Open-world gaming rewards sustained performance: dense cities, distant terrain, dynamic weather, streaming assets and long play sessions. Modern open-world engines also push CPU draw-call throughput to the limit — as we observed in our own testing, Starfield becomes CPU-bound in dense city zones even with a high-end GPU. HOENGAGER builds are positioned around the balance of CPU power, GPU headroom, memory and fast storage that makes large worlds feel seamless.

MEASURED PERFORMANCE NOTES

WHAT WE MEASURE
IN EACH WORLD.

Each open-world title stresses different parts of the hardware pipeline. These notes summarize our measured results on HOENGAGER test systems and the build that hits a specific visual quality target.

01 / RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 4K · Ultra · 100+ FPS

Open-world rendering remains GPU-bound at 4K.

Red Dead Redemption 2 at 4K Ultra is pure GPU load with no ray tracing to complicate the pipeline. In our own testing, an RTX 5070 Ti clears 100+ FPS at 4K Ultra. The RTX 5070 manages approximately 33 FPS at 4K Ultra natively — this title benefits significantly from DLSS Quality mode. An RTX 5080 pushes well past 100 FPS at 2160p with near-flawless frame pacing.

MEASURED ON Ryzen 7 7800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti 16GB + 32GB DDR5-6000 + 2TB Gen4 NVMe
  • 4K Ultra native: 100+ avg FPS (5070 Ti)
  • 4K Ultra + DLSS Quality: 120+ avg FPS
  • CPU note: X3D cache helps maintain 1% Low during town scenes
02 / STARFIELD 4K · Ultra · 65-78 FPS

Space exploration is CPU-bound in cities, GPU-bound in space.

Starfield is one of the most CPU-dependent AAA games in recent years — especially in city environments and during space combat with multiple ships. In our own testing, an RTX 5070 Ti runs Starfield at 1440p Ultra averaging 95–110 FPS and 4K Ultra averaging 65–78 FPS with DLSS 4 Quality. Dense city zones like New Atlantis dip to the high 50s where the CPU shoulders most of the load. A weaker CPU paired with the same GPU would hold 50–60 FPS in those zones.

MEASURED ON Ryzen 7 7800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti 16GB + 32GB DDR5-6000 + 2TB Gen4 NVMe
  • 1440p Ultra + DLSS Quality: 95–110 avg FPS
  • 4K Ultra + DLSS 4 Quality: 65–78 avg FPS
  • RAM note: 32GB DDR5-6000 recommended; 16GB throttles texture streaming
03 / FORZA HORIZON 6 4K · Extreme · 90-100 FPS

Racing open worlds reward sustained GPU throughput.

Forza Horizon 6 brings ray-traced reflections and global illumination to live gameplay for the first time in the series. In our own testing, an RTX 5070 Ti sustains 90–100 FPS at 4K Extreme Settings with RT enabled and DLSS Quality. The game supports DLSS 4, AMD FSR 4, and Intel XeSS 2.1 — one of the most flexible upscaling suites in any open-world title.

MEASURED ON Ryzen 7 7800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti 16GB + 32GB DDR5-6000 + 2TB Gen4 NVMe
  • 4K Extreme + RT + DLSS Quality: 90–100 avg FPS
  • 1440p Extreme: 140+ avg FPS
  • Storage note: NVMe SSD specifically required for Extreme/Extreme RT tiers
04 / FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2024 4K · Ultra · 40-50+ FPS

World-scale simulation is the most demanding open-world workload.

Flight Simulator 2024 raises the bar for visual density, world streaming and terrain detail. In our own testing, the "ideal configuration" of a Ryzen 7 7900X + RTX 4080 delivers 40 FPS at 4K Ultra. With upscaling enabled, pulling over 50 FPS at 4K is achievable. The sim benefits from higher RAM capacity — Asobo recommends 64GB as the "ideal spec" to avoid freezes when running background applications simultaneously.

MEASURED ON Ryzen 7 7900X + RTX 4080 16GB + 64GB DDR5-6000 + 2TB Gen4 NVMe
  • 4K Ultra + upscaling: 50+ avg FPS
  • VRAM note: 8GB cards tank at 4K with upscaling
  • RAM note: 32GB sufficient for Ultra 4K; 64GB avoids issues in heavy multitasking

FREQUENTLY ASKED

ANSWERS FOR
OPEN WORLD PLAYERS.

The five questions US buyers ask us most often before choosing an open-world gaming PC.

What GPU do I need for 4K open-world gaming in 2026?
For 4K Ultra in open-world titles, an RTX 5070 Ti or higher is the practical starting point. In our own testing, the 5070 Ti handles Red Dead Redemption 2 at 4K Ultra at 100+ FPS, Starfield at 4K Ultra with DLSS at 65–78 FPS, and Forza Horizon 6 at 4K Extreme with RT at 90–100 FPS. For world-scale simulations like Flight Simulator 2024, an RTX 5080 or above is recommended.
Why does the CPU matter more in open-world games than in shooters?
Open-world games push CPU draw-call throughput far harder than linear shooters. In our testing, Starfield becomes CPU-bound in dense city zones — a weaker CPU paired with a high-end GPU holds 50–60 FPS where a Ryzen 7 7800X3D achieves 75–90 FPS in the same areas. The CPU handles world streaming, AI, physics simulation and draw-call batching, all of which scale with world complexity. X3D CPUs with 3D V-Cache significantly improve 1% Low performance in these scenarios.
How much RAM do I need for open-world gaming?
32GB DDR5-6000 is the recommended target for modern open-world gaming. Starfield consumes 9–11GB of VRAM at 1440p Ultra and 11–12GB at 4K Ultra, and system RAM usage frequently exceeds 16GB during long play sessions with Discord and browser tabs open. Flight Simulator 2024 benefits from 64GB as the "ideal spec" to avoid freezes when running background applications. 16GB is workable for older titles but will throttle texture streaming in newer releases.
Is a Gen4 NVMe SSD really necessary for open-world games?
Yes for modern open-world titles. Starfield installs at approximately 130GB and loading screens between planets drop from 8–12 seconds on SATA SSD to 2–4 seconds on Gen4 NVMe. Forza Horizon 6 specifically requires an NVMe SSD for its Extreme and Extreme RT tiers. Open-world games stream assets continuously during traversal — a faster SSD reduces texture pop-in and stutter during fast travel and on-foot exploration.
How much should I spend on an open-world gaming PC in 2026?
For 1440p High in open-world titles, expect $1,299–$1,599 for an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB-class build. For 1440p Ultra / 4K entry, $1,799–$2,199 for an RTX 5070 / RX 9070-class build. For 4K Ultra, $2,399–$2,899 for an RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080 build. The share of US desktop units priced above $1,200 is expected to rise from 25% in 2026 to 35–40% by 2035, reflecting the mainstreaming of 4K gaming and world-scale open-world rendering.
